EAT NOT SO LOCAL
Let's find you some good (not so local) food. Just a short drive from Comfort...
Alamo Springs Cafe
107 ALAMO ROAD, FREDERICKSBURG, TEXAS 830-990-8004
"...This funky joint is famous for what this magazine dubbed the third-best burger in Texas a few years ago. And we are here to tell you it still rules, as juicy and plump as ever; be sure to specify a jalapeño cheese bun (makes a big difference). A basket of delicious hand-cut fries feeds the whole table. There are other entrées, including a daily special, but really,
are you gonna pass up that burger? -Texas Monthly
Welfare Cafe
223 WARING WELFARE ROAD, WELFARE, TEXAS 830-537-3700
A former post office now serves appetites in the middle of nowhere. There are some unusual dishes like mahimahi (a mild, white fish) with tomatillo sauce, but also plenty of German fare. Start with potato pancakes served with apple sauce or sour cream. The schnitzel is fabulous, as is the rouladen—a tenderized beef fillet wrapped around dill pickle, ham, sauerkraut, and Swiss cheese. If it's warm outside, sit beneath the vined trellis and watch the resident goats and donkeys grazing nearby. Live music accompanies your meal on Thursdays and Sundays. Reservations are strongly recommended. -Fador's
